Parents are calling for more government-run daycare(日托) centres , after many had to queue up(排队)overnight last Saturday to secure places for their children.
Officials at Pudong Youth and Children's Centre-which had places for 80 children-found more than 100 parents queuing outside at 6:15 a. m. on Saturday. In order to get a place, over 10 parents had camped out overnight, Meanwhile, Shimen No.2 Road Neighbourhood, located in Jing'an District, filled its 30 places for a daycare class within 30 minutes.
These are among 221 centres included in a government programme to meet the needs of working parents who can't be at home to take care of their children during vacations.
Primary school students in these centres have activities and receive tutoring(辅导)from volunteers and retired(退休的)teachers.
These government-run centres offer 16,000 places. However, Shanghai has more than 760,000 primary school students. "Government centres are popular because their fees are much cheaper than commercial(盈利的)ones," said Chen Lijun, an official of the Shanghai Youth Committee.
Government daycare centres charge (索价) up to 600 yuan a month, while commercial centres want at least 3,000 Juan a month, said Chen. Chen said the committee realized the shortage(缺少)of places but it will take time to solve the problem.
