Babu lived in India and worked as a potter(陶工).He borrowed an elephant from his rich neighbour,Purna. But unluckily, the elephant ran away.Purna said he would put Babu in jail(监狱) if he couldn\’t find the elephant in three days.
Babu had an idea!He worked day and night to make many pots, jars and bowls. He painted old designs on the new pottery(陶器) to make them look old. When he finished the last jar,he stood back to look at his work and smiled. Then he wrote a letter to ask Purna to his shop to get the elephant.
The next day,Pumna knocked on Babu\’s shop door, but nobody answered. He gave the door a big kick with his foot.
CRACK!
The wooden door crashed into the shop, taking Purna with it.When Purna sat up,he saw broken pottery all around him on the floor. They looked old and valuable(贵重的).
At that time,Babu came into the shop. "What happened here?" he said. "How did my jars get broken?"
"I\’m so sorry.I broke your old and valuable pottery.I will pay you for the jars."
Babu stood quietly without saying anything.
These jars were not old and valuable. He hoped to ask Purna to accept(接受) them in payment for the elephant. He made them look old because he thought Purna would like them that way.
Babu had a new idea.Maybe he could teach Puma not to be so greedy(贪婪).
"I don\’t want the money.I want my pottery." Babu said. "They were special. If I don\’t get my jars back,I\’ll call the police.They\’ll put you in jail."
"No,not the police," Purna said. "Let\’s make a deal."
"What kind of deal do you mean?" Babu tried hard not to smile.
"I will forget about the elephant," Purna said, "if you will forget about the valuable pottery."
Babu looked away as if he was about to turn down the deal. But after a few moments he put out his hand to Pura, smiled and said, "It\’s a deal."
